High School Experiements in the Arctic

July 19th continued-

Mark cooks hamburgers for dinner.

After dinner I take a walk with Luis and Kira we discuss the cracks in the rocks caused by repeated freezing and thawing; an experiment started by high school students last year to invite bacteria to grow under the protection of ceramic block’s.  Hopefully I'll get to come out when they do the follow-up!

The earth under each square is more likely to have plant growth under it.
I'm seeing a Pathways Field Trip--- only about $7,000 per student, I think the admin team will approve it.

Then Kira shows me an actual example of the same thing happening outside of the tent area. In some past year a team member left several tent stakes out on the ground. Nothing is growing under 3 of them and there’s some beautiful green bacteria growing under one.
Sometimes Science Just happens
